Fair Oaks Dairy Adventure

Distance: 45 minutes north on Interstate 65

The Dairy Farms of Fair Oaks is one of the largest dairies in the United States with 24,000 dairy cows living in eight different sites. The center tells the story of modern dairy farming and dairy processing, using more than 30 interactive displays and a 14 minute movie. An optional 45 minute bus tour of the dairy operations is offered each hour. There is also a souvenir shop with all sorts of cow-related items, a cheese shop, plus the café and ice-cream parlor. Combine a stop at Fair Oaks with a stop at Historic Prophetstown to compare modern technology to old-fashioned farming techniques.

Monon Connection and The Whistle Stop Cafe

The Monon Connection Museum offers a world class collection of artifacts and memorabilia from the railroads bygone era. Step inside where you’ll find an exquisite display of dining car china and silver, hundreds of hand-held lanterns, dozens of immaculately restored brass steam locomotive bells and whistles, plus a full size replica of an Illinois Central depot among the thousands of other authentic railroad pieces. Finish the tour with a meal at the Whistle Stop Café, located adjacent to the museum. Enjoy a full service menu as you watch the model trains chug along tracks overhead.

Wabash & Erie Canal Interpretive Center

Distance: 30 minutes northeast of Lafayette

Located in Canal Park along a section of restored canal, this new interactive Museum tells the story of the building of the Wabash & Erie Canal and how it affected Indiana and local the area during its 30 years of local operation. The Wabash & Erie Canal was the second longest canal in the world; the Grand Canal of China was the only one longer. Canal Park also has a historic village that is open for special events and programs throughout the year. Over 7 miles of historic trails have been developed for walking and biking; these include three National Register Sites connected with the canal. Trails are open until dusk daily. Boat rides on mile-long stretch of the canal are offered weather permitting. Extended summer and fall hours at the Canal Interpretive Center.
